The Fête du Vélo; promoting the benefits of cycling
Bicycling around the streets of the capital is a healthy pleasure and the perfect way to explore Paris. The City of Light succumbed early to the charms of cycling, creating the Fête du Vélo more than 20 years ago. This bike festival aims to promote the many advantages of two-wheeled, pedal-powered transport, showing how cycling is a pleasant, fast, economical, ecological and healthy way to get around. This festival lasts for an entire 10 days, from June 1st to 10th, and on June 1st and 2nd will provide two key events that are particularly great fun and highly anticipated. Head to the Place de la Mairie de Montreuil on June 1st where there will be many booths and stands where you can find out about the latest developments in cycling, pick up some useful equipment, participate in repair workshops and learn about having your bicycle engraved with a code in case of theft. Then, on June 2nd, it will be time for the Convergence Francilienne.
June 2nd, 2019; on your bike!
Organised at the initiative of the Mieux se Déplacer à Bicyclette cycling association, the Convergence Francilienne is a family occasion that’s free and open to all. This event, which is not a race, gives all participants the opportunity for a leisurely ride amidst a convivial atmosphere. The departure points are situated in more than 100 communes around Paris (including Versailles, Vincennes, Antony, Colombes and Saint -Denis) and in various parts of the city itself, and riders go by numerous routes to the heart of the capital through streets free of cars. All ages of cycling enthusiasts are invited to take part in these colourful parades that all eventually converge on the Esplanade des Invalides, the point of arrival, for a giant picnic. You will find the different routes, places and departure times on the official website. Coloured outfits are planned in accordance with the routes. Remember to inquire about the dress code!
After the exercise, it’s time to relax; the giant picnic on the Esplanade des Invalides
The Esplanade des Invalides was chosen as it’s an area sufficiently large enough to accommodate the many cyclists gathered together in the final parade. The arrival time is set for around 13:30 on the lawns of the Esplanade, where a giant picnic awaits participants. Bring your chequered tablecloth and picnic basket and share a delicious moment of conviviality with your fellow cyclists.
